What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a robust bio-stimulant. It aids in making you look more youthful without making you look like you have had work done. It helps to restore facial volume including wrinkles and folds in the skin.  Sculptra® addresses an underlying cause of facial aging not just the symptoms.  Sculptra® works with your body to help rebuild lost collagen (See the infographic below on why collagen matters). Starting between the ages of 18 and 20, we lose 1% of collagen a year. So, by the age 60 a person has lost 40% of their collagen.  Anyone at any age is an ideal candidate for Sculptra® because everyone loses collagen and benefits from healthier skin.  Sculptra® has also recently become popular for butt lifts, rejuvenation of arms, neck, and decolletage.

Sculptra® is made with biodegradable, biocompatible, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA).  PLLA is a material in many dissolvable sutures.  When the PLLA particles are absorbed, they aid in stimulating your own collagen production.  A client should get a series of treatments, for example, 2 vials every month for 3 months. For best results, your injector should create a treatment plan for you including a foundational plan and a maintenance plan.  Results can last up to 2 years.  Sculptra was FDA approved 18 years ago but continues to evolve over time to produce better outcomes. Steadman Aesthetics is a huge advocate for bio stimulation and natural results.  To be skilled in Sculptra® treatments one needs to have a great understanding of anatomy, meticulous care, awareness of injection depth, and excellent assessment skills.

Why does collagen matter?

Infographic titled "Collagen Primer" explaining the importance and function of collagen in skin health. It describes collagen as a protein that maintains skin structure, making up 70% of the skin. The infographic highlights why collagen is crucial for youthful skin and notes that production decreases with age, affecting skin elasticity and moisture. It includes illustrations of skin layers and collagen fibers, depicting skin changes from age 18 to 50. The section 'When?' discusses collagen loss over time due to factors like aging and sun exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sculptra is an injectable biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that helps your body rebuild its own collagen over time. Instead of “filling” with gel, it gradually improves volume loss, skin firmness, and softens folds as new collagen forms. Results look natural because the change happens slowly.

  • Sculptra is a great option if you want gradual, natural-looking volume restoration and improved skin quality—especially for midface hollowing, temples, smile lines, jawline softening, and overall facial collagen support. It’s popular for patients who don’t want an “instant filler look” and prefer collagen-building results over time.

  • You may not be a candidate if you have a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring, are allergic to ingredients, or have active skin infection/inflammation in the treatment area. Safety hasn’t been established for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, so treatment is typically deferred. If you have autoimmune disease or are immunocompromised, you’ll want a provider-led risk/benefit discussion first.

  • Common areas include cheeks/midface, temples, nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette area, chin and jawline support, and sometimes neck/chest or hands based on goals and anatomy. Some body uses (like “Sculptra BBL,” hip dips, cellulite smoothing) are discussed online, but these are typically off-label—meaning not FDA-approved for that specific use—so it’s important to review candidacy and expectations carefully.

  • HA fillers give instant volume and can often be adjusted or dissolved with an enzyme if needed. Sculptra works more slowly by stimulating collagen, tends to look very natural, and can last longer—but it’s not “dissolvable” in the same way. Many patients do best with a blended plan: HA filler for precise shaping + Sculptra for collagen and foundation.

  • Vial count depends on your age, degree of volume loss, treatment areas, and collagen goals. Some patients need only a small collagen “boost,” while others benefit from a more comprehensive plan (especially for full-face support). A consultation is the best way to estimate vials accurately and avoid under- or over-treatment.

  • Most patients complete a series of 2–3 sessions, typically spaced about 4–6 weeks apart (sometimes more depending on the plan). You’ll usually see gradual improvement between sessions as collagen builds. Many people choose a maintenance visit later to keep results looking consistent.

  • Sculptra is not instant—most people begin noticing changes around 4–8 weeks, with continued improvement over several months as collagen develops. It’s normal to look temporarily fuller right after treatment due to the sterile water used, then see that swelling fade as the real collagen-building phase begins.

  • With a complete series, Sculptra results often last up to about 2 years (and sometimes longer), depending on metabolism, lifestyle, and how many vials/sessions were used. Many patients do a light maintenance plan to extend results.

  • Downtime is usually minimal. You can expect tenderness, swelling, and possible bruising for a few days, and most people return to normal activities quickly. Because collagen-building is gradual, you won’t “wake up different,” which is exactly why many patients love it.

  • The common guideline is massage for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days (“5-5-5”). This helps distribute product evenly and may reduce the chance of small lumps or uneven texture. Your injector may tailor instructions based on where you were treated.

  • Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at injection sites. Less common risks include small nodules/lumps, delayed inflammatory reactions (rare), infection, or unevenness—especially if aftercare isn’t followed. As with any injectable, choosing an experienced injector and following your post-care plan matters.

  • Sculptra cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase (the enzyme used for HA fillers). If a lump occurs, management may include massage, time, or medical treatment depending on severity and cause. This is one reason consultation and conservative planning are important.

  • If medically appropriate, many patients avoid blood-thinning supplements/meds (like NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E) for several days beforehand to reduce bruising risk—always follow your prescriber’s guidance. After treatment, it’s commonly recommended to avoid heavy exercise for 24–48 hours, excessive heat (saunas/hot yoga) until swelling settles, and skip aggressive facial treatments or massage tools for a short window per your injector’s instructions. If you have upcoming dental work or facial procedures, mention it during your consult so timing can be planned.

  • Often yes—Sculptra pairs well with Botox/Dysport (movement control), HA filler (precision shaping), and skin treatments that support texture and glow. The key is sequencing: your injector will time services to reduce irritation and optimize results. Combination plans are a common strategy for natural-looking, long-term facial rejuvenation.

  • Price is mainly driven by number of vials and the treatment plan (series vs single visit). At Steadman Aesthetics in Greenwood Village, Sculptra is $1,200 per vial (often $900 per vial on special), and a common full-face package is 6 vials for $5,000 (pricing subject to change). Your consult will determine vial count and whether you’ll benefit more from Sculptra alone or a combined approach.
